Honduras Expat Visas 2026: Pensionado, Rentista, and Inversionista Explained

Honduras offers several paths to legal residency for foreigners, and the three most used by expats are Pensionado, Rentista, and Inversionista. Each has different requirements, different benefits, and fits different life profiles. Here's how to choose.

Quick Comparison

CategoryMinimum Income/InvestmentBest For
Pensionado$1,500/month (foreign pension or fixed income)Retirees with pension or passive income
Rentista$2,500/month (any stable foreign source)Remote workers, investors, passive income earners
Inversionista$50,000-$150,000+ investment in HondurasEntrepreneurs, real estate buyers, business operators

Pensionado Residency

The most popular category for foreign retirees. Requires proving $1,500/month of fixed foreign income — Social Security, corporate pension, retirement distributions. Despite the name, there's no minimum age requirement. If you have $1,500/month in documented external income, you qualify.

Key documents: Apostilled passport, pension award letter, income verification, apostilled criminal background check, Honduran medical exam, RTN tax ID.

Processing time: 3-6 months with a local attorney.

Special benefit: Customs exemptions for household goods.

Rentista Residency

Similar to Pensionado but with more flexibility in income source — and a higher minimum ($2,500/month). Ideal for remote workers with foreign contracts, people living on investments, dividends, or foreign rental income.

Key documents: Similar to Pensionado, plus evidence of income origin and continuity.

Important: Income must be foreign-sourced — not earned inside Honduras.

Inversionista Residency

For those planning to invest in Honduras — buying real estate, opening a business, creating local jobs. Investment thresholds vary:

  • New business investment: $50,000+ (with Honduran job creation)
  • Real estate investment: amounts vary by zone and type
  • Tourism, export, or other incentivized sectors: lower thresholds in some cases

This category includes additional tax benefits for certain types of investment.

The General Process (All Categories)

  1. Gather and apostille documents in your home country
  2. Translate documents to Spanish by a certified translator in Honduras
  3. Get your RTN (Honduran tax ID)
  4. Hire a local immigration attorney
  5. File application at DGME (Immigration)
  6. Wait for resolution (3-6 months typically)
  7. Receive your residency card

Can I Move My Household Goods Before Residency Approval?

One of the most common questions we get at Mudanzas Gamundi. The answer: it depends on your specific situation. With residency approved or in advanced process, there are options for coordinating your household goods import. Our customs agent works with your attorney to determine the right timing and correct documentation.

The key is not to act without coordination — a container that arrives without correct documentation can be held at port, generating unnecessary costs.
